Violence is also physical harm to ones self or others, or the physical destruction or damaging of property.Violence as Process     Violence is not an isolated act, although to the uninformed observer it may seem to be so.  Violence is part of a process and, if it is viewed from that perspective, early identification and intervention are possible.     A view of violence as part of a larger process is crucial to understanding that violence potential can be recognized, that effective interventions are possible, and that health care By:  Dr. Jack WeisenbornQuestions:   716-807-8333managers and their staff do have various therapeutic interventions that may be utilized to defuse a patient who is on the upward continuum of a violent acting-out episode.       Violence is a process that can be conceptualized in three basic stages: the calm or baseline stage; the preassaultive stage, which can last for brief periods or for more extended time periods (e.g. several days); and the violent act or assaultive-acute excitement stage.     Staff can intervene at any point during the preassaultive stage; however, the earlier staff identify that the patient is in the preassaultive stage and the earlier staff intervene therapeutically in the preassaultive stage, the greater the probability that the patient can be returned to baseline without the occurrence of a violent episode.     It is important to emphasize that even when staff may be convinced that a patient is just about ready to enter the assaultive stage, until a patient actually becomes violent, that patient is still in the preassaultive stage and is susceptible to therapeutic intervention. Health CurriculumRequires the Board of Regents to review the current health curriculum requirements to ensure that students have sufficient time and instruction to develop skills to address issues of violence prevention and mental health.Interpersonal Violence Prevention EducationCommissioner shall develop and distribute an interpersonal violence prevention package to schools for use in health and related areas.School Violence Prevention TrainingMust be included in Superintendents Conference Days annually.All individuals seeking certification -  must have completed a two-hour course in violence prevention.Must address violence prevention training for current staff in the yearly professional development plan.10.  Whistle Blower ProtectionProtection for those employees who report violent incidents, whereby an employee may not be disciplined or fired for reporting these incidents and is protected from any civil liability.11.  FingerprintingRequires prospective school district employees and applicants for certification to be fingerprinted for a criminal history background check in order to be cleared for employment.Does not apply to volunteers.Does not apply to current employees of a school district.  However, if a current employee terminates employment ad seeks employment in a different school district, the individual must undergo the fingerprinting process.  This law will also apply if a currently certified individual applies for additional certification, such as a teacher applying for an administrators certificate.The New York State Education Department will collect fingerprints and a &74 processing fee from each applicant and submit to the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services.  Provisions exist for a waiver of the fee for applicants for employment who demonstrate to the district that payment of the fee would create a financial hardship. SAFETY FIRST!		First and foremost in your mind should be how to meet and resolve the situation safely.		Determine and achieve objectives			Set reasonable short-term goals - a first step may be to catch your breath and find a                                voice. It may be many  baby steps.		Constantly re-evaluate and build on each step.	Investigate  Dont get used		Be aware of manipulation by student(s)  by others.		Get the other side of what you are being told.		Dont get pulled into his/her scenario.	Offer alternatives		Give him or her a way out  a way to save face.		     Gee, what youre saying sounds very personal, is it something we could discuss                                 away from this crowd?		Dont make demands.		Allow subject to leave.	Isolate the incident to keep it from spreading		Eliminate or reduce the size of the audience		After the situation:			Separate people in conflict			Separate the leader			Separate the loser	Basic communication techniques	Listening is the key!Use good active/reflective listening skills.Keep listening. Ask him or her to help you.  It will be harder for the bully to pick on you if you have a friend with you for support.Try to ignore the bullying or say No really firmly, then turn and walk away.  Dont worry if people think you are running away.  Remember, it is very hard for the bully to go on bullying someone who wont stand still to listen.Try not to show that you are upset or angry.  Bullies love to get a reaction  its fun.  If you can keep calm and hide your emotions, they might get bored and leave you alone.  As on teenager said to usThey cant bully you if you dont care.Dont fight back if you can help it.  Most bullies are bigger or stronger than you.  If you fight back you could make the situation worse, get hurt or be blamed for starting the trouble.Its not worth getting hurt to keep possessions or money.  If you feel threatened, give the bullies what they want.  Property can be replaced, you cant.Try to think up funny or clever replies in advance.  Make a joke of it.  Replies dont have to be wonderfully brilliant or clever but it helps to have an answer ready.  Practice saying them in the mirror at home.  Using prepared replies works best if the bully is not too threatening and just needs to be put off.  The bully might just decide that you are too clever to pick on.Try to avoid being alone in the places where you know the bully is likely to pick on you.  This might mean changing your route to school, avoiding parts of playground, or only using common rooms or lavatories when other people are there.  Its not fair that you have to do this, but it might put the bully off.Sometimes asking the bully to repeat what they said can put them off.  Often bullies are not brave enough to repeat the remark exactly so they tone it down.  If they repeat it, you will have made them do something they hadnt planned on and this gives you some control of the situation.Keep a diary of what is happening.  Write down what details of the incidents and your feelings. When you do decide to tell someone, a written record of the bullying makes it easier to prove what has been going on.If you are different in some way, be proud of it!If your school has an anti-bullying system, use it to get help.  If youre not sure how it works, then talk to a teacher.Usually, its difficult to sort out the bullying on your own or even with the help of friends.You should think seriously about telling an adult.  An adult you can trust might be a teacher, parent, someone from your family or a friends parent.Everyone needs help sometimes and asking for help to stop bullying doesnt mean that you are weak or a failure.Stand strong and spend time with your friends.
